Jal Jeevan Mission

Overview

The Government of Tamil Nadu has undertaken initiatives under various schemes through relevant departments to ensure the provision of tap water connection to every household in the state, with a particular focus on grass-root levels. Jal Jeevan Mission is one of the Schemes implementing for providing Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) with 55 lpcd drinking water to all rural households. According to recent data from the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) on the status of households with tap water supply, Tamil Nadu has provided tap water connections to 78.19% of households as of now.

The State Planning Commission is in the process of carrying out a comprehensive evaluation of the impact and effectiveness of implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission scheme in rural areas of Tamil Nadu.

This study aims to identify barriers in tap water accessibility at the rural area level, and its sustainability assess the extent of piped water coverage in rural households, analyze its impact on health and family expenditure, evaluate water supply frequency and cleanliness in rural areas, and determine the status of piped water access.

The impact assessment encompasses four distinct study areas chosen for their geographical diversity.

Status

A pilot survey has been conducted to pinpoint water-related challenges in the selected study areas for research alignment. The Study has been entrusted to the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Sriperumbuthur.
